MIX AND MINGLE WITH CRAIG POTTON AT CREATIVE WAIKATO

Thursday 5th November 1pm

MOVIE NIGHT PLANETARY

7pm Friday 6 November at Creative Waikato, 131 Alexandra St

$10 per ticket but free for all the hardworking volunteers in the environment sector.

Come along to this awe inspiring movie. You will be challenged and inspired.

PLANETARY asks us to rethink who we really are, to reconsider our relationship with ourselves, each other and the world around us - to remember that: we are PLANETARY. In a stunning visual exploration, the film interweaves imagery from NASA Apollo missions with visions of the Milky Way, Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas, and the cacophonous sounds of downtown Tokyo and Manhattan, with intimate interviews from renowned experts including astronauts Ron Garan and Mae Jemison , celebrated environmentalist Bill McKibben, National Book Award winner Barry Lopez, to anthropologist Wade Davis, and Head of the Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu school. They shed new light on the ways our worldview is profoundly affecting life on our planet.

Please RSVP To Jan    admin@envirocentre.org.nz

Just Employment Waist High Planters FOR SALE

These boxes are the work of men engaged in Just Employment, an aspect of Anglican Action’s Re integration Programme that journeys beside men reintegrating back into the community. Employment is an essential element of this.

Just Employment has developed several initiatives to create employment. These waist high planters are one such initiative.

They are made predominately from untreated pellets which can be picked up free around the city. Each planter box is slightly different from another as they are not mass produced. Planters can vary in height and can be ordered at a height suitable for you.

The cost of the planter is in the labour, as we pay an hourly rate, with a small transport component. Our commitment is to increase the hourly rate we pay to the living wage within two years.

A purchase of one of these planters is a Just purchase for; the environment, paid employment, a tax contribution and a better hourly rate.

WAIKATO WOMEN’S REFUGE

TE WHAKARURUHAU CALL FOR HELP

Our goal is to complete our half finished safe house ready to accommodate five women and up to ten children by Christmas. Can you forward this email onto any of your friends or contacts that you think may be able to assist us?

We really appreciate you helping us get the word out.

Community Safe House Build coming up 2-13 November 2015.

We need help in two ways:

Donate time: We are rounding up both retired and skilled tradespeople as well as non-skilled volunteers to help out during the Community Safe House Build project between 2-13 November. For more information and to sign up to help online visit www.roundingup.co.nz .

Volunteering just a few hours of your time, along with others in our community, will make a lifetime of difference to the families supported by Waikato Women’s Refuge.

Donate goods: To make the safe house a home we need new or lightly used donated items including beds and bedroom furnishings, laundry machine, vacuum cleaners, all kitchen items, lounge furniture, bathroom furnishings, meeting room table, whiteboard, computers, TV, office furniture, printer and more. Please phone 07 855 156907 855 1569 if you can donate anything.

About Waikato Women’s Refuge Te Whakaruruhau

Waikato Women’s Refuge is New Zealand’s largest refuge and the only refuge in the country that operates a 24/7 support service. In Hamilton city alone, our staff assist between 85-100 women and their children every week. Waikato Women’s Refuge’s sixth safe house was moved onto it's site last year. It was generously donated by Braemar Hospital and is the former Salvation Army's The Nest home. We have had some lovely support by trades people and sponsors in the community to get the house reconfigured to how it is now and need some further support from our community and friends to get this completed before Christmas.

Thank you for your support for the refuge that you have given us to date, we really do appreciate your kindness. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to know more.

TRAVEL CHOICES 7pm to 8.30pm Thursday 5 November

At the Waikato Environment Centre

Do you need to escape the car habit? Come down to the environment centre join a discussion about why we need to simplify, slow down and ponder alternatives to fossil fuel powered transport. We also have representatives from Hamilton Biking Network encouraging us to get on our bikes and consider:

• Cycle commuting: Summer is coming and it’s a great time to start cycling to work, to the shops, cafes, parks … whatever works for you. Join a discussion about cycling around town & time for questions to some experienced commuters.

• Cycle holidays: Inspiring examples of holidays without a car – trips with bicycles and combining bicycle use with buses and trains in New Zealand.

So come on down, the kettle will be on!

Please RSVP Tania at: tania@envirocentre.co.nz

ENDERLEYSTRONG SHOWCASE and BBQ Friday 30th October 3.30

Over the last little while, Enderley Park cannot seem to catch a break with the break ins! So as a studio we are going to celebrate with a (very short notice) showcase

We are looking at smashing out some projects this week with a positive messages like "Whanau look after everyone - let's look after our community #enderleystrong"

Our aim is to really express "What can we do", and "It's our community, so we need to be responsible" through the best way we know how, Media making !!

I dont think it is going to affect those who are doing the breaking in so much, but if we can affect the kids who know them and who might be able to influence them, that is a huge result. Community transformation, one small bit at a time. Boom!

GREEN FINGERS AND OR ENTHUSIASM NEEDED

Do you have green fingers or are you a novice who would you like to get involved in gardening?

Hamilton Homeless Trust needs your help to establish a community garden. We are looking for volunteers to develop a productive garden that exemplifies sustainable food production. As well as growing produce to be used at our food servings, we desire our garden to be an educational and therapeutic retreat to volunteers and patrons, as connecting with nature is proven to be positive for mental health and well-being.

We will be holding a planting day to start to transform a piece of grassy land into a bountiful vegetable garden on Sunday 1 November from 10 and until 2pm. We already have some raised beds ready and seedling coming along in trays which will be ready for planting out. It will also be a great opportunity for like-minded people to meet one another over a good cause. Please bring a spade, trowel or other equipment if you have (we will have some spares). If you can bring a plate for a shared lunch it would be great - it won’t be all work; this is a social event too!

Previous gardening experience is not required!

The land is on Kaipaki Road in Ohaupo so a short drive out of Hamilton. For that reason it would be good if we could coordinate car-sharing on the day.

If you think that you could spare some time to get involved please contact Camilla in 0223410643 or email hamiltonhomelesstrust@gmail.com

Give A Little for Kaivolution

Our first Kaivolution van has maxed out and we need another van and van driver to ensure that we can rescue all the good food that is available before it goes to the landfill.

With 60,000 kilos of food rescued since Kaivolutions inception in October last year, food donations are coming in thick and fast.Donations of food are also likely to increase in the spring when there is an abundance of delicious Waikato fruits and vegetables. Lots of food will be available for rescue right before the holiday period and we need another van so that we can collect it and redistribute it to those in need.

Another Kaivolution van and van driver will ensure that more good food is rescued. Rather than being discarded to landfill, all the food that Kaivolution rescues will feed those in need.

The Biggest Issue...Seriously, it's Climate Change

Posted 8 years, 10 months ago    0 comments

Door Knocking for Our Future - it's the least we can do!

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21, will be held in Paris from November 30 to December 11.  In recognition of how critical this event is for the future, Waikato Climate Action has organised a door knocking campaign to let people know how they can engage with this issue.  Waikato Climate Acion also has events planned like the Waikato People’s Climate March (29th of Nov), banner making workshops and The Greatest Climate Show on Earth (see below). WCA has a petition people can sign or they can offer to volunteer.

The door knocking campaign is this Saturday afternoon.  Door knockers will have training and will work in pairs supported by trained climate activists. You don’t need to have any expertise; you just need to care about the future of the planet and its people. If you are able to help, send a text to Julie 021 042 2812 to say you can come and turn up at The Meteor Theatre at the bottom of Victoria St at 1.00pm this Saturday 17 October. Your help is urgently needed. If you can spare a few hours, please come.

Here is the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1699385400296779/

The Greatest Climate Show on Earth - an event not to miss!

There is growing awareness and concern about climate change and how it will affect our various local communities. There is a feeling that perhaps we as individuals and groups could be doing something about it but what would that something be?  Should we be encouraging our government to make a stronger commitment in Paris later this year? What difference will it make?

It’s hard to get information that is understandable and relevant to us in New Zealand and the Waikato. To answer some of these questions we present -

The Greatest Climate Show on Earth

Conversations with Jim Salinger, Jeanette Fitzsimons, Al Gillespie, Linda Te Aho and Iain White.

Tuesday, November 10th 7pm. Bill Gallagher Events Room One, WINTEC, Hamilton

Book here now! $5 unwaged, $10 waged, $20 flush.
