FOREST & BIRD SUNDAY 13th SEPTEMBER

Explore Waikato Wetlands South of Hamilton

Meet at 9.00am on the east side of the railway line where it crosses Collins Rd, Melville. We will convoy to Lake Koromatua. Keith Smith of Hamilton Fish and Game Association will lead us around the lake and tell us about the restoration work. The second lake is Kareaotahi (Cameron) off Rukuhia Rd. The Care group here has also been planting and controlling pests for many years and has made a pleasant walk around this small lake. John Pretty from the Lake Care group will meet us. We will contribute to the on-going care of this reserve by releasing some recently planted trees (for about an hour, and if anyone would like to volunteer further there is blackberry to remove). The third lake we'll visit is Rotopiko or L. Serpentine which has a predator proof fence and plans for a Wetlands Information Centre.

Easy walking and suitable for families. Gumboots a good idea, particularly if it's been wet in the preceding days; gardening gloves for pulling weeds. Bring lunch and water bottles etc.

Dactylanthus Training Wednesday 26th August

Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society is embarking on a project in conjunction with DoC to protect and expand populations of Dactylanthus taylorii on Mt Pirongia. Volunteers plan to learn from professionals who have worked with the species and developed skills in monitoring flowering, hand pollination and sowing seed in order to better protect the existing populations near the summit of Pirongia, to search for populations which may exist but haven’t yet been found, and to establish new populations at more accessible sites on the mountain.

Dactylanthus is New Zealand’s only fully parasitic flowering plant. Not only is it an intriguing species, it is thought to be an important ecosystem driver; the large quantities of nectar its flowers produce being an important food source.

The first of PRS’ training field trips is to be held this coming Wed 26th August at Pureora. Thomas Emmitt of DoC Te Kuiti will take us to Dactlyanthus clumps and show us how to assess seed set. If any of your members would be interested in helping PRS with this project and would like to join this trip please contact Clare St Pierre: clare.stpierre@gmail.com

KAIVOLUTION NEEDS ANOTHER  VAN AND VAN DRIVER to rescue food from donors, save it from the landfill and redistribute it to those in need. We have launched a givealittle campaign to raise some funds so that we can secure another van and driver and rescue all the good food that is available! If you would like to contribute, please click here to visit our givealittle page

With over 50,000 kilos of food rescued since Kaivolutions inception in October last year, food donations are coming in thick and fast. Donations of food are also likely to increase in the spring when there is an abundance of delicious Waikato fruits and vegetables. Lots of food will be available for rescue right before the holiday period and we need another van so that we can collect it and redistribute it to those in need. It makes no sense to throw good food away just because we don't have the capacity to collect it! Rescuing food that is "good enough to eat but not good enough to sell" is not only good for our environment, but also good for those in need. Another Kaivolution van and van driver will ensure that more good food is rescued. Rather than being discarded to landfill, all the food that Kaivolution rescues will feed those in need. By ‘giving a little’ you can help us make this happen!

LOVE FOOD, HATE WASTE: ROOTS-TO-STALK AND NOSE-TO-TAIL COOKING

New research shows that New Zealanders waste a staggering $872 million each year of food that is perfectly edible, which equates to around $560 per family.

To turn this waste around, the Love Food, Hate Waste campaign encourages families to do one thing differently to cut down the food they throw in the bin and save money.

To help with this, local Streat Kitchen chef Michael McMeeken is featuring in a series of video clips on using every part of a food item. This is elsewhere known as “roots to stalk” and “nose to tail” cooking.

Michael, who is passionate about reducing food waste, demonstrates how to make simple, tasty dishes from leftovers.

“It’s great to be involved in something like this that aims to make a difference. It’s about showing people that making the best use of their everyday ingredients is actually really simple to do,” he says.

In the videos, Michael ensures nothing goes to waste in the kitchen by making creamy sauce from cauliflower stalks, soup from a chicken carcass and much more.

And he’ll be serving up a free cup of tasty soup made from cauliflower leaves and stalks to families attending sports at Neale Park at 10.30am until noon on Saturday 22 August. Also on the menu will be handy tips for reducing food waste at home.

The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is funded locally by Nelson City and Tasman District Councils, and developed by Nelson Environment Centre.

The clips can be found on the Nelson City Council website:

CALL OUT FOR COMPOSTABLE MATERIALS needed for the Hamilton Homeless Trust gardening project

Hamilton Homeless Trust has been offered the use of an acre of land to create a community garden. Working with schools, tertiary education institutions and volunteers, we are in the process of developing a productive garden that exemplifies sustainable food production. As well as growing produce to be used at our food servings, we desire our garden to be an educational and therapeutic retreat to volunteers and patrons, as connecting with nature is proven to be positive for mental health and well-being.
In order to turn this grassy acre of lawn into a bountiful vegetable garden we could use materials to help get the beds started. We need compost or compostable materials such as
  • mulch
  • cardboard
  • grass clippings
  • manure
  • lucerne hay
  • cut up branches
  • newspaper
  • wood chip
  • leaves
  • coffee grounds.
Any other useful garden materials that you have to offer would also be very much appreciated. If you have any to spare please get in touch with Sarah at mcanallen.sarah@gmail.com

IMPORTANT !!!ANIMAL PEST CONTROL PLANNED

Families visiting the Te Miro Scenic Reserve, Gudex Memorial Park and neighbouring Maungakawa Scenic Reserve are being advised that from 17 August 2015 toxins will be laid in these areas in order to control rats and possums. This work is being carried out on behalf of the Waikato Regional Council as part of its Project Halo biodiversity enhancement programme. Rats are known to have a negative impact on native forest ecosystems by eating the eggs and chicks of native birds as well as restricting natural regeneration of the forest by eating seeds. Possums eat flowers and fruits as well as browsing the foliage of native trees.

Animal pest control contractors Epro Ltd will laying the toxins. Operation Controller Mike Reid said that a mixture of diphacinone and encapsulated cyanide will be used. Diphacinone is an anticoagulant toxin that is effective at controlling rats while cyanide capsules target possums. These toxins will be contained in plastic bait stations, bait bags and potato starch receptacles called Strikers. Toxin warning signs will be erected at all entry points. Under no circumstances should the toxic baits be touched.

A map showing the areas to be treated is available on the Te Miro School website. Mike Reid will be contacting residents of neighbouring properties over the coming weeks but can also be contacted at Epro Ltd’s Taupo Office on 07 378 485207 378 4852 extn 709. See map attached

ORGANIC FARM NZ EVENT

Will be running a field day 1pm-3pm Saturday 8 August 2015 at the Waikato Waldorf School.

The School has a large vegetable garden and orchard and has decided to get it certified organic with OrganicFarmNZ. This shows a real commitment by the School, and their gardener Kerin Coleman, to showing students and their parents, how vegetables and fruit can be grown organically.

As part of the certification process our organic auditor John Palmer from Tauranga will carry out an audit of the property to confirm that the OrganicFarmNZ certification standard is being complied with (and if something is not being complied with, what steps are needed to take for compliance). There will be lots of discussion about the garden, the certified organic standard we follow and the certification process. So if you are interested in what’s involved in the certification process, or are just interested in talking to people who are passionate about organics, then join us at the workshop.

This is a free field day. It will be followed by a cup of tea, etc. Please email me to register so we have some idea of numbers. The best entrance to get to the garden is to park in the School carpark at 68 Te Manatu Drive, Hamilton. The garden is about 20 metres along the School driveway – we will have a sign there.
