PUKEMOKEMOKE PLANTING REMINDER

This month's working bee is on Saturday July 18 at 1:00 pm. The plan is to continue planting the grassed areas with manuka and kanuka.

So far this month around five hundred trees have been planted in ideal conditions. The post hole borer takes care of the digging and the trees are at just the right stage to slip easily out of their pots and settle into the moist earth.

It is also just the right time of year to take a walk up towards the summit so you can search for the fungi that have appeared alongside the newly cleared track. There are hundreds of yellow and orange waxgills. Colourful and cute. If you look really carefully you might even find a few tendrils of yellow corals.

MATT & ANDY ASK FOR YOUR HELP!

We are Matt and Andy and we are all about inspiring New Zealanders to engage with simple solutions that help us look after our people our waterways and our land. We are running a campaign that is focused on reducing the use of plastic bags at supermarkets and farmers markets in Hamilton and Raglan.

Below is a link to a pledge me campaign we are running.

The reusable bags look awesome and a pretty good deal for $5

Is Your Group Prepared For Changes In Work Health and Safety Laws?

Dear fellow conservation community member,

Safety at ‘work’ concerns us all, and we can all be impacted either directly or indirectly when someone is injured or worse, loses a life. New Zealand has a tragically poor record in work-place safety – and much of this is underpinned by the very-widely held belief ‘it won’t happen to me’. But of course, accidents happen daily – and to people like you and me. As you will be aware, we are soon to have new Work Health and Safety (WHS) laws introduced to hopefully improve our workplace performance, and these will also include and impact upon groups utilising volunteers.

Conservation Volunteers has worked with volunteers across New Zealand and Australia for over 30 years, and over that time, has developed tried and tested – and constantly updated – safety processes for field-based volunteer safety. These processes, together with policies, guidelines, and documentation have been collated and adapted for generic use into our ‘In Safe Hands’ toolkit. This kit outlines how the law impacts on your group, and how you can meet your obligations – and even more importantly, ensure the safety and well-being of your volunteers whilst remaining engaged and productive!

You can help us gain a better understanding of the conservation community’s needs in this area – and how the ‘In Safe Hands’ toolkit may assist meet those needs – by opening the link below and completing the survey; it will take about 5 minutes at most and will be much appreciated.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WF2ZQT3

This information will be collated with the responses from all community group responses and assist us in planning how we can best assist you and the practical conservation volunteer groups. Your responses are confidential and will be collated with all the responses. Individual groups will not be identified in any report.

With thanks,

Dave Sharp

RAW MILK PETITION

Marea Smith

WAPF Hamilton Chapter Leader.

Most of you will be aware that the a raw milk legislation change will come into force on March 1, 2016.

Raw milk will still be able to be sold from the farm gate and there will now be no limit to the number of litres that can be purchased. It is good news that home delivery will now be allowed, however, collection from a designated location will now explicitly be forbidden.

Many of you are already accessing your prized raw milk this way and this new legislation is effectively harder on the urban consumer than the previous policy. I believe this will have the effect of taking milk deliveries underground making criminals of good citizens. Home deliveries only could increase both the cost of raw milk and the risks from unsafe storage.

I ask that all of you sign the petition to allow consumers the option to pick up raw milk from a collection point

To: The Minister for Food Safety (Jo Goodhew)

The petition is really important and could use our help. Click here to find out more and sign:

PLASTIC FREE JULY IS UNDERWAY!

A few words from Lisa from Eco Deals.......

Did you know that apart from the small amount that has been incinerated every piece of plastic ever made still exists in the world today? And that in the first 10 years of this century MORE plastic was produced than the entire last century! - eeek very, very sobering.

Something has to give which is why we are encouraging everyone to accept the Plastic Free July Challenge.

It is pretty simple: attempt to consume no single-use plastic during July. If all single-use plastic sounds a bit daunting, just try the “top five” Plastic Bags, Plastic Bottles, Plastic Straws, Plastic Cups and Clingfilm. Don't worry we will have heaps of tips and alternatives for you....go on....give it a go...we can't really afford not to.

IS THERE ANY INTEREST IN AN EDIBLE WEED WORKSHOP?

Would anyone be interested in attending an edible weed workshop with Julia Sich (the weed lady)?

this is her website link;http://www.juliasedibleweeds.com/

Message from Mikaere Peck 0212695872

Just attended her workshop in Tauranga last Sat 30 May 2015 and it was awesome. I learnt so much about weeds that has changed my whole way of thinking, even blackberry and gorse etc, how to use them, why they grow and how to get rid of them if you don't want them (without using poisons). The workshop costed $40.00 and you also receive Julia's ebook with that.

Julia is interested in doing a workshop in Waikato, around the Hamilton area somewhere and I'm willing to help her set that up. What we need is someone with a wild garden or a slightly out of control garden that has heaps of weeds growing. It could be a town garden, it doesn't necessarily have to be rural. As long as there are lots of weeds growing.

I'm just putting out some feelers at the moment to see if there is any interest from anyone in the Waikato area.

MATARIKI IN THE CITY SATURDAY 18TH JULY

To celebrate Matariki (the Maaori New Year) libraries have a free event Matariki in the City.

Matariki in the City will be on Saturday the 18th of July at Central Library and Garden Place. The event will start at 9am and finish at 3pm. Activities on the day include Manu Aute (kite making), the Cosmo Dome, storytelling, stage performances, face painting, finger nail painting, and tamoko stencils. The event will be a fun day suitable for the whole family. There is plenty of media attention and we expect this event to be well attended.

At this stage we are looking for market and food stalls (promotional stalls too). All stalls will be located in Garden Place site map to come. The cost is $32.90 for kai and market stalls (mobile food stalls must have permit otherwise it’s $95), promotional stalls are free. If you are interested in having a stall at our event please let me know as soon as you can. It would be great to have you at our event.

Thanks,

HELP NEEDED WAIWHAKAREKE NATURAL HERITAGE PARK

Saturday 27 June 2015 - We will be planting. Please try and come to this working bee as we need every pair of hands we can get for planting. We've got about 400 plants to get into the ground and if we get 25 people that will only take 2 hours so we "get out early".

9am - midday

Meet in the car park on Brymer Road opposite the zoo.

Bring a spade and wear your gumboots as it maybe wet in the area we're planting. Best to bring gloves to wear and most importantly morning tea.

Look forward to seeing you on Saturday morning. Much appreciated Moira

MONARCH BUTTERFLY NZ TRUST

Hundreds of monarch butterflies..

have been invading my home! They're not LIVE ones, though. They're beautifully decorated paper ones, contributed by schools all over the country. I have been amazed at the huge response to help us create the massive artwork which is going to thrill and delight people coming to the premiere of the movie Flight of the Butterflies in 3D at Sylvia Park on Monday, 29 June.

A few notes about the premiere. Tickets are going quickly and I'd hate it if anyone missed out. There will be no sales at the cinema - you must go to our website to book. Click on the link below:

http://mb.org.nz/movie

If you have friends or family or colleagues in Auckland who share your passion for butterflies, please would you pass this message on to them? They may not have heard about Flight of the Butterflies, and we'd hate them to miss out.

WILD THINGS CONFERENCE AUGUST 2015

As the programme develops, we are sending these updates to both registered delegates and our database in general. Even if you have already registered for the conference, these emails will keep you posted on the latest developments.

Despite excellent efforts by a large number of people we are still losing the war against biodiversity loss in New Zealand. Much effort is localised and not of sufficient scale to bring about the changes required. Session 3 of the conference will explore how we can scale up effort to make a substantial impact on biodiversity conservation on a regional and national basis.

Session 3: What's needed to scale up effort?

Wednesday 12 August, 2pm

Chair: Rob Fenwick, Trustee, Predator Free New Zealand

International keynote: Delivering global scale conservation at a local level

Patricia Zurita

Patricia is Chief Executive of the Birdlife International Partnership and joins us via a pre-recorded interview with Rob Fenwick.

Birdlife International is the world’s largest nature conservation Partnership, with 120 BirdLife Partners worldwide. Patricia is an outstanding conservationist with a strong track record of delivering global scale conservation at a local level. Patricia has worked across the globe developing economic initiatives and building civil society capacity, in partnership with both the non-profit and the business sectors. She takes a pragmatic approach to conservation that has delivered real results while working with and helping to develop civil society.
