"Swap-Table" Items Wanted

Your Waikato Environment Centre would like items (to be picked up or dropped off), of e.g. Excess Produce, Cuttings, Plants, Small Trees, Herbs, Flower seedlings, Seeds, Arts and Crafts - anything that reinforces the environmentally friendly message. 

We're hoping that people will come in with items to swap, so that we have a rotating inventory of fresh and interesting stock. Can you help us start this off?

Opening of Kakepuku's New Accessway

Project works over the past 3 years have included:

Construction of a new access walk to the summit Pa Hikurangi. Protection of 200 year old pa earthworks, and facilitation of visitor access, using boardwalks. Construction of a viewing platform, complete with interpretative signs, seating and visitor's book.

Submissions to EPA re Bees; Organic Food Co-op; Dotterel program

Please note submissions to the EPA close on the 2nd September re the following:

Application APP202142 initiated by Environmental Protection Authority to review and implement appropriate non-contact periods for certain organophosphate or carbamate plant protection substances, in order to protect bees, and other insect pollinators, against adverse effects arising from post-application exposure to the substances.

This application meets EPA criteria to be open for submission from members of the public and relevant agencies. The submission period opens on 22 July 2014 and closes on 2 September 2014 5pm, which is the last date we will accept submissions. Submissions may be forward by post or email.

Organic Food Co-op

If anyone was interested in joining a food co-op (in newsletter recently), we at the Waikato Environment Centre would be happy to take orders from members of the public.

Contact admin@envirocentre.org.nz to speak to Rose or Ruth, and we will endeavour to help. Orders are placed once a month, and items are generally those which last a long time (rice, nuts, dried fruit, baking goods etc).

NZ Dotterel Protection Program

The NZ Dotterel breeding season at Port Waikato runs from Sept - March and Karen needs help with Predator Control and Monitoring of breeding sites.

People can do as much or as little as they like, and as the projects keep growing there will be lots of opportunities.

Te Pahu Landcare Annual Community Kaniwhaniwha Planting Day

Sunday 31st August, 9am.

As access is across private property, we will be guided to the planting area. Gather at the Kaniwhaniwha Reserve Carpark at 9am.

From Hamilton take SH23 to Whatawhata. Turn left onto Te Pahu Rd after the bridge over the Waipa River.  Limeworks Loop Rd is about 10.6km on the right. Bring your favourite spade, however DOC will have some available. Just starting...

Propagation from seeds, cuttings, division, and the art of budding and grafting. The courses run over a 12 month period and are part-time, outside normal working hours or to suit, once a fortnight. These are certificate courses.
