Sirocco is visiting 3 Aug - 16 Sept

Sirrocco the kākāpo is New Zealand's official Spokesbird for conservation, and is visiting Maungatautari between 3rd August and 16th September.

NZ Dotterel breeding season runs from Sept - March and Karen Opie from Port Waikato Beachcare needs volunteers.  Predator Control and Monitoring of Breeding sites are two main areas of concern.

Exciting Job Opportunity

The Waikato Environment Centre is looking for a part time administration/reception person.

The person we are looking for needs to have excellent communication and written skills, be positive and friendly with an interest in environmental issues, and sustainable living, and a sound background in office administration.

Much of the job entails face to face interaction with the public and our members, but there are also opportunities to work independently and undertake or help with projects and events.

Working 25 hours per week, you will be responsible for being at the centre during opening hours, looking after those who use the centre, selling products, producing online newsletters and helping environmental groups publicise events, answering queries, and, in conjunction with the Centre Manager, help with funding and financial recording.

How to make a Bird Feeder

1. Mix dry ingredients into bowl. Use a 2:1 ratio of dry to oil/fat.

2. Melt some lard or suet in a pan, add dry mix. Stir until all fat abosorbed and mixture sticks together. Dry ingredients can be rolled oats, cheese, old crackers, seeds etc.

3. Make a hole in bottom of yoghurt pot, thread thru length of string, pack the pot with the warm fat mixture. 

4. Place in fridge overnight, then cut thru and peel away pot. Tie a big knot at one end of the string to secure the cake.

5. Hang cake in a tree or shrub and wait for birds to come and feast.

The Demise of New Zealand's Freshwaters

Our lakes, rivers and groundwater outside of the conservation estate are in a perilous state. In his 2014 Charles Fleming Lecture, Dr Mike Joy suggests it is past time for scientists to come out from behind their microscopes, binoculars and computer screens and make a stand on the many environmental issues facing New Zealaners.
