Open day at the Cambridge community garden

Posted 12 years, 1 month ago    0 comments

This Sunday 22nd July

The garden is located on Vogel street, next door to Resthaven.
Starting at 9am and running through to around lunch time.

There is much to be done including preparing ground, scraping down the shed etc - so there will be something suitable for everyone.

As well as the above our next area of focus is on the orchard. To assist we require someone with a dingo with auger, mini digger, bobcat or similar who would be prepared to come down & dig the 20 or so holes for fruit trees. If you are able to help with this please contact us.

If you can't make it then there are still ways to help. As a community group we look to both individuals & businesses to help get things established.

As such we have a lengthy 'wish list' that you may be able to help with:

  • Water tank to enable us to connect to the nearby house to collect rain water.
  • Suitable piping for the tank.
  • Pergola to provide a shady spot for all those hard working volunteer gardeners
  • Bark chip to cover the pathways.

So we look forward to seeing you on Sunday, or hearing any ideas for the garden. Please also pass on to your friends and family as this is a community effort and the more that can come down the better.

Regards
The Community Garden team.

10 July, 2012, 5:30pm

This is a documentary film concerning peak oil and its implications for the suburban live.  The assumed ideal life of suburbia is explored and where its place is in the future, as the planet apporaches a critical era as the global demand for fossil fuels begin to outstrip supply.  How will the populations of suburbia react?  Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow?  And, what can we do now to avoid it?

Discussion to follow.

Bird survey

Posted 12 years, 2 months ago    0 comments

Don't forget to do your garden bird survey - finishes on the 8th July. What better excuse to sit and do nothing but look out the window at the birds. Didn't see a category for Hyline chickens though.

Landcare Research, in collaboration with Forest & Bird and the Ornithological Society, established a garden bird survey to monitor the distribution and population trends of common garden birds in New Zealand. You can fill in the online form to record your bird numbers.

Volunteers Needed for River Planting / Sirocco Coming Soon

Posted 12 years, 2 months ago    0 comments

Request for Planting  Volunteers from Waikato River Trail Trust

We are looking for volunteers to assist with planting from mid July to late August this year.

Waikato River Trail Trust has a large planting project covering sites which include the Huihuitaha Wetland; Whakamaru and Mangakino areas, and along the Pokaiwhenua Stream.  These places are part of  the 100km of river trails in the South Waikato and Taupo district.

This project will enhance the biodiversity of the Waikato River, reduce sediment and nutrient outflow into the river, and provide cover and habitat for further animal species.

For further information please contact Glyn Wooller 078833720 or gwooller@waikatorivertrails.com

Sirocco the Kākāpō is Coming Soon!

Sirocco will be on Maungatautari and ready for his first visitors on 18 August.  Bookings can now be made on Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust's (MEIT) website www.maungatrust.org   (follow the Kākāpō logo).

The parrot's visit is only for six weeks and provides what may be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many people as this bird species is critically endangered - there are only 126 kākāpō left in the world.

His reputation precedes him as an amazing and entertaining bird, as well as a high profile ambassador for kākāpō recovery.  New Zealand’s first official spokesbird has more than 11,000 fans on Facebook!

Many supporters have been asking how they can help or get involved, so here are a few ways in which you may be able to assist us to make this a very successful event.

  • Forward this email on to your friends, family, corporate or other contacts
  •  Place a link on your website to our Sirocco page
  •  Ask for a supply of Sirocco brochures for display in your business or other location
  • Print out a copy of the attached poster for display in your business or other outlet
  • Use our Kākāpō logo below on your email signature
  • Set up a retail promotion or display
  • Become a sirocco ambassador (just give us a call and we will let you know how)
  • Other ideas – please let us know!

To make your bookings visit www.maungatrust.org. Many businesses are also keen to reward their staff or clients by booking a larger group of say 10 or preferably 25 (a full quota) . If you would like to do this please phone Cathy on (07) 823 7455.
