WAIKATO TIMEBANK POTLUCK Lunch 14 March

GLOBAL DIVESTMENT DAY Saturday February 14th Hamilton Gardens

Tēnā koe,

It's been a whirlwind summer for the 350 team and we're really excited to announce 350 Aotearoa's first event of the year. February 13th and 14th is global divestment day and we're proud to be launching our Fossil Free Banks campaign!

This Saturday February 14th, come down to The Hamilton Gardens at 5pm for Picnics and Placards. Bring some friends and get ready to tell your bank that it's time to break up with fossil fuels!

Click here to RSVP for the event!

This event is being hosted by  the Waikato Environment Centre and is packed full of great speakers and information about the divestment movement in New Zealand. But if we want to make this event really awesome, we need your help.

Once you've RSVP'd for the event, if you are on Facebook, please click click here to share, and please forward this email to your networks and take up the challenge to bring at least one other person with you.

This year we're taking the divestment movement in New Zealand to the next level. Come along and hear about our Fossil Free Banks campaign, sign up to our call to action and be a part of something big this year!

See you on Saturday,

Lizzie & Niamh for 350 Aotearoa

P.S. Have you signed the petition asking Dunedin's City Council to divest yet? The local campaigners down there need your support, please sign and share here.

EARLY TUESDAY CLUB 2015 kicks off on 21 April 2015.

This highly regarded club will fill up fast, please get your registrations in asap.

This club will run from 5.30 to 7pm once a month and provide a series of useful monthly workshops on areas such as roles and responsibilities, working with founding documents, understanding your financials and making the most of your meetings. There will be opportunity to request other topics of importance and interest to the participants.

Waiwhakareke Friends

The first working bee for Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park this year.

Saturday 28 February 2015 - We will be weeding.

9am - midday

Meet in the carpark opposite the Zoo on Brymer Road.

We will be releasing/stomping the weeds from previous plantings. Best to bring gloves to wear and most importantly bring morning tea. Look forward to seeing you on Saturday morning.

Cheers Moira Co-convenor of Friends of Waiwhakareke

Riverlea Environment Society

It's been a bit quiet so far this year, but it's time to get cracking again! I'm feeling as passionate as ever about keeping Riverlea as a great place to live, and making it even better, especially by improving Hammond Bush. It is such a treasure.

Some of you will have received a letter about the boardwalk maintenance that's starting on Monday. Basically bits of it are rotting and will be replaced. Hamilton City Council is funding it. From Mon 9th until the 20th Feb, the section from the Malcolm St end to the Hudson St dip will be closed from 7 am to 6 pm.

From 23rd Feb - 6th March, the stretch between the Hudson St dip and the Balfour Cresc end of the boardwalk will be closed, for the same hours.

Twilight working bees will resume this Wednesday. (Well, 5.30-6.30 isn't exactly twilight at the moment, but twilight sounds better.) We'll be yanking out weeds in a shady area. Wear gloves, and bring secateurs or loppers if you can. Long sleeves help protect arms, too. These are fun quick working bees that give you a mid-week dose of nature.

Kind regards

Andrea

Waikato Botanical Society Members,

This is an initial email regarding a trip to Table Mountain, Feb 27 to March 1. Please email Kevin Carter (kcarter@doc.govt.nz) to register interest. A few more details below, with more to follow soon.

Our first trip of the year will be to Table Mountain, a high plateau on the Coromandel, home to a fascinating assemblage of plants that you will rarely see elsewhere. The plateau is a bog and is difficult to move around in, a good level of fitness will be required. The plan is to meet in the Kauaeranga Valley on Friday evening, Feb 27, then travel to Moss Creek Campsite where we will be based for Saturday night, returning on Sunday March 1. There may be the opportunity to fly an advance party to the campsite by helicopter, allowing more time for surveying the plateau, with the cost partially subsidized by DOC and the Society. For the rest of us it will be a three hour walk to Moss Creek.

ABOUT THE HUI

3rd-6th April 2015 (Easter)

Moving On

Basic Regeneration with Permaculture

This year we embrace Gift Culture, honouring all the gifts we bring to co-creation. Friday we will share a pot luck evening meal, then the following three days will be fully catered with wholesome, local and organic lunches and dinners. We’re planning a blend of talks and presentations, Open Space Technology, PiNZ meetings and plenty of time for sharing stories, making connections and exploring all things permaculture. The Hui is a family friendly event designed to engage all participants. While provision of awesome activities for younger ones hosted by volunteer Activity Coordinators will be available during the days, your kids remain your responsibility throughout the weekend. There is no accommodation at the Hui site this year. After careful consideration of a number of smaller and pricier options around Christchurch, we decided on Central New Brighton School Hall to keep the ticket prices as low as possible, the hui easily accessible and open to more people. Watch this space for information on lift shares, accommodation and billeting options, coming soon. Planning the 2015 Hui has been a great adventure so far.... we invite you to join us for a long weekend of learning, sharing and dancing!

ACCOMMODATION

Because our venue is a school (even though it has closed), on-site accommodation is not permitted. You will no doubt be aware that accommodation is at a premium in Christchurch, and unfortunately the nearest campground to the venue is full of people still unable to live in their homes. We are asking attendees to organise their own accommodation, but will attempt to facilitate billeting. Chhristchurch residents - you may not have a spare room, but can you provide toilet, shower and breakfast facilities for someone camping on your lawn or sleeping in their van in front of your place?

PRODUCTS IN STORE

Newly arrived in The Waikato Environment Centre is the Sticky Beak range of handy garden tools with wooden Native beech handles, great to use if you suffer from a touch of arthritis. Use to grub flower beds or just general weeding, on its side as a cultivating tool or for sowing seeds to make a hollow line in soil. This has got to be the handiest garden tool…… and best of all this little beauty is made in New Zealand and has two longer versions so that you don’t need to bend!

WAIKATO REGIONAL COUNCIL- Community Initiative Fund

Please find attached an application form for another round of the Waikato Regional Council's Small Scale Community Initiative Fund.

The SSCIF is designed to support community and individual landowners by funding materials, up to the value of 5K, used in pest animal and plant pest control in ecological restoration projects. The criteria are broad enough to suit a range of projects and to allow repeat applications by groups for smaller grants. SSCIF projects will be driven solely by communities and individual landowners and will have minimal level of support from staff. Once groups are more established and if their projects require more resources, they have the option of applying to the Environmental Initiatives Fund (EIF). In the past the criteria prevented funding of contracted services as the focus was to support volunteer labour. This has changed to allow up to 1K to be applied for contracted labour to recognise the need for skills required to plan and undertake pest control that may not be available amongst a volunteer group. Applications for the fund have traditionally been opened in June and allocated in July each year. The fund has been consistently oversubscribed so council has agreed to double the funds made available.

The fund is also open to those with QEII covenants and those wanting to undertake work in areas identified by the Council as Significant Natural Areas (SNAs).

Be aware that if you have applied to the Department of Conservation's Waikato Community Conservation Fund you won't hear the outcome of this fund before the 20th February. You may choose to apply to the SSCIF as an additional option in case you miss out on funding through the DOC fund.

Applications for a further 75K of funds are open and close 20th Feb 2015.

Cheers Moira
